Great input everyone…interesting answers and insights.
As promised, here is the first part of my response to the “Golfing Dilemma”. I think you will all enjoy this….
I want to play a game that will help the Golfing Dilemma answer make more sense. I will now post two questions, and if you want to play, post a simple “yes” or “no” response to each question in the comment box with your name.
If you give an answer to both of these questions, I will be able to tell you something about yourself, and you will also see how you are wired mentally towards questions like this. I was given the same set of questions a few years ago and it was a real eye opener. Some of you have already played this game with me before, and you may figure out what this has to do with the Golfing Dilemma. I will post the complete answer tomorrow. ?
Question One:
You are in Bath and Body Works and have just tried the most amazing strawberry hand lotion ever! It costs $11 per bottle and as you walk to the cash register, the clerk whispers: “you can get that same bottle for just $4 at our other store which is a 5 minute walk away.”
Would you walk to the other store to save $7?
Question Two:
You are about to purchase a new business suit that costs $517- don’t worry, its worth it- AMAZING! You are ready to be fitted, have the cash in hand, and as you approach the cash register, the clerk whispers to you: “You can get that same suit for $510 at our other store which is a 5 minute walk away.”
Would you walk to the other store to save $7?
Be sure to have a Yes / No for each- you are welcome to describe your reasoning if you would like.

1. Yes 2. No
Ok, honestly – I had to think this one through a bit. My answers are: 1) Yes. 2) No. After much thought, here are my reasons why. Yes, I would walk 5 minutes away for the cheaper lotion. Because, I would be able to buy 2 more bottles for only a dollar more than the original price at the first store. BIG SAVINGS! No, I would not walk 5 minutes away to save 7 dollars when I’m buying something that is $517. It’s not like I could buy another suit with the saved $7. Hmmmm, however, I could buy an extra bottle of lotion 🙂 jk
1. Yes 2. No
Reason-same as Maria’s
1. no 2. no
Any time I have to tote two young kids in and out of a store, I get what I want and get out!
1- No, I would probably just ask her if she could give me the deal so I didn’t have to go elsewhere, and if she wouldn’t-depending on my mood I might just pay the regular price or might just bag it altogether. 2- Nope
1. Yes..same reason as Maris 2. No not worth the trip when I’m spending $517…seven dollars may by me lunch but then I may not fit as well in the AMAZING suit…
This question is one of many used by a psychologist to measure a person’s logical reasoning skills. If your answers are the same (example: no and no, or yes and yes) your reasoning skills are more logical. If your answers are different (yes and no for example) emotion plays a higher role in your reasoning skills. Neither is good or bad, and like the golf dilemma question, it is designed to discover how we reason in given situations. .
In both cases, $7 is $7 it is irrelevant on what the purchase is, in both cases a five minute walk would save you $7. This shouldnt change anything, but for whatever reason, it does. When I first was asked this question, I answered yes and no.
Humans are highly illogical, so in most cases, the answers are almost always different because we tend to weigh emotion more highly than logic.
lol, my answer is yes and yes. 🙂 Seriously, $7 is $7. Plus a five minute walk never hurt anyone. In the end, I am $7 richer than I would have been, and if you do this on a consistent basis, (bargain shopping) those few dollars add up quite quickly and nicely.
well from $11 to $4 looks better than $517 to $510. If someone is willing to spend $500 on something it ought to be good. If they wanted a bargain they shouldn’t gotten a cheaper suit all around like $100 or something. I’d make the 5 min trip if I could get a $500 suit for $100
Kim- you nailed a commonly known persuasion concept called "The Contrast Principle", which is that differences can appear greater or smaller depending on what they are presented with. $517 doesnt seem like much more than $510, but $11 seems much more than $4, still its $7.
Advertisers and retailers use this all the time- (and car dealers). They present something that is much more expensive than you can afford, say a new Honda Accord for $32 K, and then show you a Civic for $22 K. Suddenly 22K doesnt feel like 22K, but it is still 22K. Weird huh?
