Canon 70D vs Nikon D7100 ISO Noise Chart

Update: You can see my full comparison between these two awesome cameras here: Canon 70D vs Nikon D7100 Comparison Video

Lets play a game. Here is a chart showing 2 cameras, one is the new Canon 70D the other is the Nikon D7100 Both cameras were using their respective 24-70 2.8 lenses; Canon 24-70 2.8L and Nikon 24-70 2.8 ED

I shot a color chart, hand held, in fluorescent light, with AWB on both cameras, standard ISO noise reduction turned on.

Starting at ISO 400. I then doubled the ISO to 800, stopping down my aperture 1 full stop to compensate for it and repeated the process until I reached 12800.

I then stacked and cropped at 100% for close inspection. Which do you think is better? Each camera is labeled in it’s respective column on the bottom of the chart.

More to come! Subject Matter is also quite important. Take a look at these low light candle tests:

Canon 70D Issue – DEAD SENSOR PIXELS!

Man, this is heartbreaking. Got my Canon 70D yesterday, been looking at it and playing with it all afternoon, into this evening, doing various tests, then I download my images, look at them and lo and behold….DEAD PIXELS!! A whole freaking row of them. (See Red Arrow)

Its not the monitor either, it is on the sensor! I see it in live view as well. While my initial test results are very encouraging for ISO performance (above image is 1/60, f9.0, ISO 12800 – very clean), dead pixels DOA is very VERY disappointing! Ill have to call Canon tomorrow.

I’ve been flooded with emails about when it will be ready for download, hard to say, but I would estimate it would be in the next 3-4 weeks, with the DVD to be available first week of October.

So far I can tell you this, the Canon 70D is impressive, not only in the revolutionary dual pixel focusing system, but in many other aspects as well.

I will have some important sample comparisons and other evaluations up soon (very soon). I’ve read in quite a few places with reviewers poo-pooing it. Dont believe the hype, I will show you why. If you are a 7D owner and have been waiting for an upgrade…this is it.

iblazr – The LED FLash for Smartphones

The iblazr is a LED flash that attaches to your smartphone. Nothing new here, however this little device can fully synchronize with camera apps. In preliminary before and after photos the light from this flash is far superior to smartphone built-in flashes. The iblazr has successfully more than doubled it’s target goal of $58,000 dollars on kickstarter.com. After reaching the $100,000 mark they will now manufacture a diffuser that can snap over the flash. At the $150,000 goal they’ll make the iblazr available in various bright colors. It looks like this startup is going to reach that goal.
