Update: You can see my full comparison between these two awesome cameras here: Canon 70D vs Nikon D7100 Comparison Video
Lets play a game. Here is a chart showing 2 cameras, one is the new Canon 70D the other is the Nikon D7100 Both cameras were using their respective 24-70 2.8 lenses; Canon 24-70 2.8L and Nikon 24-70 2.8 ED
I shot a color chart, hand held, in fluorescent light, with AWB on both cameras, standard ISO noise reduction turned on.
Starting at ISO 400. I then doubled the ISO to 800, stopping down my aperture 1 full stop to compensate for it and repeated the process until I reached 12800.
I then stacked and cropped at 100% for close inspection. Which do you think is better? Each camera is labeled in it’s respective column on the bottom of the chart.
More to come! Subject Matter is also quite important. Take a look at these low light candle tests:
Through my eyes, the 70D images look much better, and I do not care if DXO says otherwise. However, the auto white balance makes strange colors randomly. I also realized that exposure varies greatly in different ISO. You used aperture and shutter speed manual or automatic? Thank you in advance.

Is this out of camera jpg or is RAW?
Wow! Way to go Canon!
70D totally pwned D7100!
No comparison. 70D looks so much better in every shot. Can’t wait for the new 7D to come out
expose them correctly and you will see Nikon has less noise
What would you do differently, Ronald, to expose them correctly? What do you feel was done incorrectly in the Michael’s testing to compare apple to apple?
Canon 70D is, to me obviously better. All colours, levels of light ISO etc.
Next time if you want to compare how two cameras are doing in high ISO do it on non post-processed photos – this means RAW files developed in one application with standard settings.
Those shown here a JPEG’s and as all should know Canon uses a lot of high ISO noise reduction and you cannot turn it off, like on Nikon.
Canon 70D looks far better than the Nikon. What I really want to know is how does it hold up in High ISO against my 7D and 5DMKIII. Is it worth the upgrade to my almost 4 yr old 7D and will it make me happy now that I am shooting with a full frame at higher iso’s?
Yes, the Canon looks better, that doesn’t mean that I’ll switch systems (I shoot a Nikon system with the D7100 as my body). This comparison makes sense for someone who is trying to decide which system to commit to.
I had both to test, these shots are not underexposed, Nikon has a very good light meter, so those Nikon fans has to understand that Canon has lot less iso noise, and Nikon better DR…thats it!
Everyone knows Nikon desharpens their default setting. You have to compensate in settings. There is nothing better than Nikon when it comes to salvaging highlights and shadows.
