This is the theatrical version of Phillipe Petit’s audacious tight rope walk between the World Trade Center towers in 1974. The documentary of the same subject, Man on Wire, was the 2008 Sundance Film Festival’s World Documentary Winner.
Not only is this story compelling, it is shot in such stunning fashion by the-one-and-only Robert Zemeckis, that if you watch this in 3D on an IMAX screen as I did, you are completely immersed in the experience of the walk itself and should feel as if you are on that wire too. This is the films greatest achievement, and I believe it will win awards for it. There is clearly CGI used, but it is so good you won’t notice.
I think with The Martian out this weekend, The Walk is going to be a little slower to start, but this is an absolute GEM of a movie.
Highly recommended to all audiences.
