This came up the other night at dinner. Having worked with and seen tons of bacteria in my life (as a former genetics grad student). I am a semi-germaphobe.
Germs are everywhere, even when we think we are being clean. I hate to touch door handles most of the time. However, there is one thing that freaks me out more than anything, and it is using drink dispensers and letting waitresses refill my glass as demonstrated in the second illustration.
Most people are not aware of what is going on.
Can you see it?
I’m with you Michael…. even the gas pumps…. we grab the handles, fill our tanks…. get a bag of chips… put all those bacteria on that pump directly into our mouths and swallow them….. YIKES!! ON another note. Got the speedlite DVD last night, watched in its entirety, AWESOME! Timely too, I have an engagement shoot this afternoon where one picture requested was a sunset shot. I have learned so much in one viewing….
I am a "semi-germaphobe" too. And it jumps up to full throttle when I have to take all three of my kiddos into a public restroom (all under 8 yrs old). It is aweful!!!
I saw an test on the the ice alone in soft drink dispensers…yikes! It is a wonder we are all alive.
i’m at a coplete loss with this one..,
surely the way the glass is filled is down to the person filling it with or without straw
nothing in the diagrams stands out at all
Let me take a shot- On the left, the pitcher is touching the rim of the glass-where people drink from. Because of this, germs are being introduced into the pitcher. On the right, the pitcher is touching the straw, which people drink from and harvests their germs. Those germs creep into the pitcher. Am I close?
The pitcher touching the glass or the straw tip which ultimately goes in the mouth taking all the bacteria along?
I am on board with this one. Bacteria spreads via contact and people are placing it everywhere they touch. Thank goodness for the H1N1 scare last year. Hand sanitzer dispensers are seen just about everywhere for the public to use.
Speaking of restaurants, what is with the sign in every bathroom instructing that every employee must wash their hands before returning to work. Is it necessary?
Not sure, any word on the top 10 in each category? It’s been 3 days and everyday I look for the new post to say "top 10" or something….but instead I see soft drinks, xbox, ahhhhhhhh
I’m dyin’ over here waitin’
🙂
I will take a shot at the diagram. Both of the diagrams show how germs from the mouth are spread from person to person. The pitcher touches either the rim of the glass or a straw on a refill then transfers the germs to the next person receiving a refill. Likewise the person that received a refill also got some extra goodies too! So you may end up with germs from many people on any given refill. On another note, I noticed that some bathrooms has a device above the door handle that clams the handle is cleaned after each use (sonic waves?). How can this be possible and is it trustworthy? It can’t beat my paper towel that I use from drying my hands…….. 😉
Have you ever taken a New York City Subway?
OMG!! I just got it after reading the comments and I am sooo grossed out! Ewwww. People put their mouths on their cups or straws & when refill they touch the soft drink levers or the edge of the pitcher, which is then rubbed against YOUR cup. It would be like every person in the place putting their mouth right in your cup!! Grosssss!
Having survived germs all my life, I guess I don’t take this as serious as I should as I seldom get sick. I survived life through public school, college, military life and a family. I currently have four kids (ages 2 to 9) and a wife, that seem to always get sick, yet I never do. I work in a .gov office with 200 others, most of which get sick.
I do keep myself clean, wash my hands several times a day, and I have the cleanest computer keyboards you will ever see. I also try to avoid rooms with more than 12 people in them.
Its not a big deal – germs are good for your immune system
