From a pure film making perspective, Shutter Island has everything: Great acting, cinematography, character development, storyline, twists, clues dropped throughout, etc. Scorsese is a master filmmaker and I greatly respect his work, Shutter Island is no different. Exceptionally thought out and executed. I am sure it will win several awards.
If I was making a recommendation to a friend, I would say skip all together. Its an emotional and psychological train wreak of a sad movie (sad as in actually sad, not poor quality), and it explores emotions, sadness and terror that I do not think will make you a better person. I think that sometimes there are attempts at subliminal programming as well as bold suggestions, and Shutter Island has both. I wouldn’t want my children to see it, simply because it takes you to places most humans should never visit. In some ways, I regret seeing it myself.
Michael I find myself not being interested in this sort of entertainment; books or films; after Haiti.
interesting, I actually wanted to see this movie…perhaps I’ll venture into seeing it despite your suggestion…I’ll see with caution
Johnnie and I saw this movie last night too.
Both of us liked it, although we had to shake off the feeling of having had our minds twisted.
The wife wanted dinner and a date tonight. I have been traipsing to Haiti so I said sure. She wanted to see Shutter Island. My friend Michael having prepared me I demurred. We saw Crazy Heart instead; excellent film I hope Jeff Bridges gets the Oscar.
I feel a lot like the author of this review. I regret watching this movie. LOTS of subliminal programming in this movie. This is the most fear inducing movie I have watched in awhile. I would tell everyone I meet not to watch this movie because of its bad psychological side effects.
