The Leica Oskar Barnack Awards is a distinguished honor presented to “photographers whose unerring powers of observation capture and express the relationship between man and the environment in the most graphic form in a sequence of a minimum of 10 up to a maximum of 12 images.”

The award was named for renowned inventor of the Ur-Lecia. It was the first 35 mm camera that had the weight, build, and functionality to be used widely by professional journalists and artists. It’s invention changed the course of photography forever. The award has been presented to professional photographers since 1979.

In promotion of 2017’s award they released this great short bio on Oscar Barnack. I hope you enjoy this quick bit of photographic history as much as I did.
