Bruce Livingstone was the founder of one of the biggest stock photography agencies to hit the internet. In 2006 he sold iStockPhoto to Getty Images for $50 million dollars. According to the article, he found himself discontent not only with the overabundance of stock imagery but also with the lack of quality of these images. ‘We wanted to introduce an authentic style – a way of producing imagery that looked real and not fake and staged, and all these gross things that you think about when you think about stock photography.’
His new goal was to create a site that offered authentic and quality images by quality photographers. He created Canadian based site Stocksy.com. They only add a select number of photographers per year and it’s by invitation only. More importantly photographers are getting a larger cut of the proceeds.
