Ive been testing this lens now for about 3 weeks and I have to say I am very impressed. My other Macro was a Canon 100mm 2.8, but it was also much bigger. The Sigma, is smaller, has a minimum f stop of f 45 and allows for a 1:1 magnification ratio. The result is some very impressive (and BIG sized subject) macros.
My recommendation on it is this, if you do not have a good macro, take a close look at it. It is much cheaper ($265) than a Canon 100mm 2.8 ($450+), and for what I use it for, I think it is as good as the Canon. This is currently the only non Canon Lens I use regularly, but quality images are all that matter in the end, and for macros this little guy is amazing.
Thanks, as always, for the insights. Coincidentally, I recently got a set of extension tubes (Kenko). I’d never even heard of them before, but wow, what potential! I would think these would be great for wedding details like rings and such. A few sample shots in my blog. Very narrow depth of field, but interesting results. Keep the great info. coming!
Extension Tubes are absolutely the cheapest, most effective way to get into macro photography, but no one gets them because they dont know what they are.
I just finished placing an order for my sigma 50mm macro and decided to visit your blog. What do ya know, you are doing a post on it. I am always a step behind everyone. I’m glad you like it though. Any trouble focusing? By the way, I just picked up the 35mm 1.4 too. I remember you saying that was on your list. It was tough to find one, and ultimately I had the hardest time deciding between the 24 1.4 and the 35 1.4. So, if it doesn’t pan out for me I’ll see if your still up for one.
Hey Craig- I focus manually on macros, so I havent tested the auto focus out on it. I still cant find the 35mm 1.4, waiting for BH to stock it again. Thanks for visiting!
