Something I find myself doing these days is instead of rushing out to movie theaters each Friday afternoon (as I have done for most of my life), is to find great movies that seem to have slipped through the cracks. Regardless of when they came out.
Greater — Which is available through Netflix DVD rentals, tells the story of Brandon Bulsworth who is considered to be the greatest walk-on story of modern college football. This is a FANTASTIC movie. Not only because I too was a walk-on at BYU and could relate to so many of the things Brandon did, but because it is a true story of overcoming adversity through hard work. Really just a fantastic movie. Ill try not to ruin it, but if you have a chance to see it, I would highly recommend it.
I was a little sad to learn that for it’s 9 Million Dollar budget, it struggled at the box office. Nonetheless, this movie has to be near my top of my list for the type of films I would like to be creating myself. All-round wonderful inspirational story and filmmaking.
thanks for the review…I love your reviews so much that I was compelled to give the producers a bone and bought the bluray on amazon…question for you MA…the scene where marty is caught between the old whittling farmer and the young football player towards the end…do you sense the writers adaptation of struggle between good and evil…devil and God? just something I picked up on. absolutely wonderful movie though! will be sharing it for sure. thanks MA
David- I think you are correct! The woodcarver, to me absolutely was the devil. It felt like the footballer was a real person, but represented good. I feel like the woodcarver was not a real person, but rather thoughts being put into Marty’s mind by an unseen force, but essentially exactly what you describe. Really deep and powerful symbology on top of an already great story! Such a good movie! Thank you for your feedback, I wonder if doing the reviews are worth it sometimes – now I know they are!
