Zoom H6 Audio Recorder

Zoom the manufacturer of the popular H4n portable recorder has released an impressively upgraded model called the Zoom H6. I have personally used the H4n for 4 years now, and it is a truly quality product.

Among the upgrades are four interchangeable microphone capsules, four gain control knobs, records directly to SD cards, and a large full color LCD display. The versatility of this portable recorder ticks all the boxes for the on the go videographer

Sennheister G3 Wireless Microphone

This is our go to microphone for recording quality audio off a single person. Because most of my lessons are just me, this works most of the time. I have to say, over the years, it has been a PERFECT solution, especially now most dSLRs have manual audio controls. We plug it straight into the camera and record directly onto the video file.

Rode dSLR Microphone

One of the problems with dSLR video is that the built in microphones are not that great. In fact, I would go so far to say that the quality of audio coming through them, are unusable for most situations. Also, when you handle the camera, or even focus, some of this is recorded through the camera’s microphone.

The solution is to use an external microphone, and in the case of the Rode Microphone, you can plug it straight into most dSLR video cameras. The Rode is better suited for recording audio of many individuals instead of one person. A wireless lavaliere microphone will give better quality, but every person has to have one, and if you have many people, it is both difficult and expensive to feed these all onto one track.

For most applications, the Rode is a very good value. We are using it more and more.

Zoom H4n Audio Recorder

While we do not use this as much as we used to, consider the Zoom H4n to be the “Swiss Army Knife” of audio recording. It is most useful to record high quality audio with the 2 built in microphones, which records to a SD memory card. You can also feed a variety of other microphones into as well.

Very, very handy if you are doing a lot of video work.
