If you saw and understood the genetics behind GATTACA, well, the future is here. 23andme.com (you have 23 pairs of chromosomes which package you genetic profile) is the brain child of that really really rich google dude and his wife- no...I am not kidding. Actually it wasnt really their idea, they are just are one of the few companies that are actually doing this.
The idea is that if your DNA codes for anything that might cause you problems in the future, a simple test you purchase and use may be able to identify it long before symptoms occur. The way it works is there are databases of information about what DNA sequences are related to certain diseases. You buy this kit, swab your mouth (which will have a few hundred of your skin cells, each containing your genetic map) send it in, 23andme sequences your DNA looking in specific regions where these problem codes are (they wouldnt sequence everything, that would take a several years) and then compare your code with the information they have about sequences which may cause certain diseases. Preventative medicine and treatment are possibilities which very well could help you live a longer life.
In regular words, this will extend the average lifespan many, many years. Right now its about 76, I wouldnt be surprised if by the time I was 76, the new average lifespan will be about 100.
This technology is here to stay, and yes, I really do believe eventually it will get extremely fast, cheap, useful and abused just like GATTACA. (which if you havent seen I highly recommend, one of my all time favorite movies).
