A recent study published by Psychological Science has shown that familiar tasks such as crossword puzzles and socializing might not be enough to keep an aging mind sharp. The study suggests you need to get out there and learn unfamiliar and challenging tasks. When the participants were given unfamiliar tasks to complete that involved learning new skills, their memories showed great improvement after 12 weeks.

One of the tasks given was digital photography. The complex process involved with learning and remembering the functions of digital photography helped the participants increase cognitive function. While this study focuses on the aging mind, I believe learning new and challenging tasks is essential for a healthy life at all ages. Clearly digital photography is a great way to do it.
