Scooter Diving with Greg & LIz
My good friends Greg and Liz have a scooter diving company here on Maui and Im lucky enough to be invited to go with them, along with my other buddy Ryan. If you do not know what scooters are, its essentially a big propeller you straddle and it pushes you through the water. I did a youtube video on it you can see here: Michael's Underwater Scooter Adventure Dive
The problem with the scooters is you want to stay streamlined, which means no big cameras. Ive used Go Pros, but I hate that I cannot see what I am filming when I have an extra battery pack on. The Canon G12, has live view, fits in my pocket and is small, but has ISO problems over 400. The good thing about it, is it shoots RAW and is easy to color correct.
This is what you can expect with no color correction:
(This is Liz without her scooter)
This is what you can get with color correction shooting RAW:
The coolest thing we saw was a spotted Eagle Ray. It was small, but holy cow can that thing cruise!
We always see a few turtles
The G12 does pretty well above water when there is plenty of light. Last image was processed with Michael Andrew Paintballer Pro ® Presets
Going diving again tomorrow, my friend Jonathan just got certified and we need to get a lot of dives in so he will feel comfortable night diving with me.
