Did a little more research and it turns out Gareth Edwards is an After Effects (an Adobe program you can run on your own home computer) wizard. Check out these amazing scenes he put together over the period of about 120 days on his computer....at home. If you are familiar with After Effects, you should be able to see some of the breakdowns and figure out how he did it. Like Neil Bloomkamp, who wrote and directed "District 9" it seems that with a solid knowledge of 3D animation editing, it is possible to make a "big time" looking movie for a fraction of the cost.
