In an effort to foster a “safer, kinder community” Instagram announced today that they will be blurring images that are flagged as ‘sensitive’. As they say if the photo does not violate their guidelines but someone, apparently anyone, reports it as sensitive, the “team” will review it. If they deem it as sensitive it’ll get the blur overlay and message.

The post doesn’t elaborate what the team deems sensitive but you can read about their guidelines HERE.

I think we’ve all had our day ruined by a horrifically graphic or violent image or message on social media that we didn’t anticipate seeing. It’s gotten a lot worse with Facebook’s live feed. You’re just trying to enjoy lunch then – BAM! A graphic image shocks you and stays with you for the rest of the day. It’s a tricky thing and a fine line to walk between censorship and the importance of freedom of expression. You can read the entire post HERE.

What do you guys think about this new feature?
