Nikon Issues Statement About Fraudulent Cameras
According to Nikon they have been seeing fraudulent cameras coming through their service center. The Nikon D800 is being made to look like the D800E by replacing the cover. The smaller sensor D7100 is being made to look like the full frame D610 and the D4 made to look like the more expensive D4S.
These are mostly being sold on the internet and unfortunately Nikon cannot service them. If you're concerned about the authenticity of your camera, you can check by following these directions;
"When the “overview” display option is enabled in full-frame playback mode, the name of the camera used to capture the image is displayed in the top right corner of the monitor, allowing users to confirm the true name of their camera. If "NIKON D800E" is displayed, your camera is an authentic D800E. If any other name is displayed, your camera is a fraudulent D800E."
