New Year's Eve of 2010 Tanja Hollander found herself alone communicating with a friend, who was in Jakarta Indonesia, on Facebook. The next morning while pondering relationships, friendships, and social media, she came up with a really interesting idea. "I became interested in the intersection of art, photography, social media and global travel both virtually and in real life". With a background in fine arts and photography, her plan was simple; she wanted to travel the country, then globe, photographing her Facebook friends in their own homes.
She gave her friends three opportunities to participate in the project. She would contact them once by email, then a Facebook message, and then a post on their Facebook page. If they didn't respond, she removed them from her friends list. She was surprised to find that percentage to be very low.
