When I first received my Canon 6D
, I wanted to know how well it focused in low light compared to the Nikon D600
, Canon 5DII
, & Canon 5Diii
and learned that the Canon 5Diii
suffered some serious low light focusing problems, and was much slower, even with a Speedlite
Focus assist. There was a lot of both positive as well as negative feedback from many critics about the low light focusing test & how it was set up. I was even ridiculed, scoffed at and dismissed by several commenters on DPReview.
When I also started receiving emails from sincere Canon users who were noticing the same thing, they kindly asked me to post my results on Canon's New Forum under a thread about the 5Diii struggling to focus in low light. Some of my results had already been posted from other forums & websites. Its sort of a fun thread to read through because it starts out as a general complaint, and then evolves from there. The original poster wrote what he observed, to which Canon asked for specifics, where I then posted my results. As far as I know it was the first and only test that actually quantified in numbers the differences between the three cameras focusing ability in low light conditions with a Speedlite.
Today Canon announced the following on their thread which you can read here: Canon Says Low Light Focusing Fix Coming for 5Diii
(You can see some of my posts around Page 6
This is what Canon finally said:
Hi all, we have an important update on this topic. Thanks again for your feedback on our Forum.
Canon has confirmed that, depending upon the shooting conditions, it may take slightly longer for the EOS 5D Mark III and EOS-1D X digital SLR cameras to acquire focus when using the Speedlite's AF Assist Beam, compared with that of the EOS 5D Mark II and EOS-1D Mark IV digital SLR cameras using the Speedlite's AF Assist Beam. We are developing a firmware update to enhance the focusing feature for the EOS 5D Mark III and the EOS-1D X. The schedule for release of this firmware update will be announced shortly.
To all those critics and people who made fun of me, I have to say I feel redeemed!! :) How awesome to to know Canon is listening!! Looking forward to the update!
